care & feeding of your
wooden product
Cutting Boards & Trays
All of our products that are made to come in contact with food or beverages have been finished using a blend of mineral oil, all natural beeswax, and citrus essential oil. Refinishing your wooden item is super easy! Just follow these simple steps:
Clean the surface: Start by washing your item with warm water and mild soap. Scrub off any leftover food, then let it dry completely. Do not put your wooden items into the dishwasher nor allow them to soak in water.
Sand them (optional): If your board or tray has deep scratches or rough spots, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit works well). Wipe away any dust after sanding. If the wood has started to smell funky, rub down with half a lemon or spritz with white vinegar; both will help sanitize the board as well. Allow the lemon or white vinegar to dry completely.
Apply Broken Saw Board Butter or mineral oil: Apply a generous amount of our Broken Saw Board Butter or food-grade mineral oil directly onto the item. You can use your bare hands or any clean cloth to apply the board butter or oil. NOTE: Do not use vegetable or olive oil as they will go rancid unlike mineral oil.
Let it sit: Allow the item to soak in the goodness for at least a few hours, or overnight for best results. The wood will absorb the oil and look refreshed.
Wipe off excess: After soaking, wipe off any remaining with a clean, dry cloth.
Repeat as needed: For very dry items, you may need to repeat the process a few times until the wood is fully hydrated.
Maintain regularly: To keep your wood in top shape, oil it whenever it looks dry.
spice Mills
Our spice mills are finished with a food safe hardening oil that creates an extremely durable finish and enhances the natural beauty and grain of wood.
Using a damp rag with clean water is sufficient for cleaning your spice mill. Remember that wood and water do not mix - a damp rag means your rag should not be “dripping wet.” Clean using a damp rag with water as needed but avoid doing so daily.
other products
The tips above will work for almost all products we sell. Some, like our multi-colored wood items, should not be cleaned with anything other than a dry cloth or a very lightly damp cloth. If you are uncertain about any care steps, please reach out and we’ll be happy to provide guidance.
