Matching Memorial Boxes for the bestest dogs
Two summers ago, my mom mentioned that they still didn’t have a proper box for their dog, Doug. They’d lost him in the middle of a hard year, and the other dogs already had boxes on the mantel. She wanted his to match, at least close enough that the three of them would look like they belonged together.
I told her I’d make one and asked for photos of the existing boxes. She never sent them, which is fine. A few days after that conversation, David Picciuto, a YouTube maker I follow, posted a video of boxes he’d built for his dog Weenz and a few of Weenz’s friends. Good timing.
I used his design as a starting point but didn’t copy it. I wanted room for a few mementos and a separate compartment for ashes. Mine are cherry with walnut splines. David’s versions have inlay, but I wasn’t comfortable with that yet, so I skipped it.
The result is three boxes: Doug, Snuffy, and a shared box for brothers Baxter and Bosco. They look like they came out of the same shop, because they did. In April of 2021 I had to help my dog, Memphis, walk across the rainbow bridge. My mom, who took care of him as any loving grandmother would, was devastated. As a surprise, I made a fourth box for Memphis Bear, and sent along some of his cremains as well, so he now has a place as well at grandma’s house.
